Deltec has evolved through three major phases:
The Origins (1959 - 2001)
Deltec can trace its origins to the formation of Deltec Banking Corporation Limited in The Bahamas in 1959 by Clarence Dauphinot and a number of prominent international investor friends who sought to invest their own capital in a variety of ventures, and ‘special situations’ particularly in South America. It is one of the oldest private banking and trust companies in the Bahamas. To allow for the participation by non shareholders in these ventures and other “Deltec ideas” and additionally to provide trust structures and banking services, Deltec Panamerica Trust Company Limited was formed in 1961. Deltec established a reputation for original and innovative investments and was an early participant in the purchase and sale of emerging market and high yield debt; it also established a reputation for attentive service to its demanding clients.
The Atlas Capital Period (2001 - 2010)
Some of the founding family shareholders sold their interests to shareholders of the Atlas Capital Group, an institutional alternative investment fund business with which Deltec merged in 2001. For most of the next nine years Deltec Bank’s businesses expanded successfully and its investment activity became centered on the alternative investment fund area.
Current Position (from 2010)
The Atlas Capital Group Institutional business was sold in 2008, and at the end of 2009 Deltec reverted to its 2000 structure, with some existing shareholders expanding their interests while a limited number of new shareholders were invited to join the Group.
The aim of the current ownership and management is to ensure that Deltec remains an exclusive, private and highly regarded banking and trust institution able to provide its client base with a unique selection of high quality, robust private banking, investment management and fiduciary services that are appropriate for them, and whose service delivery and performance leads not only to client retention but also to its selective expansion.
